2010 Scholarship Awards Gala a Big Success
October 25, 2010
On Saturday, October 23rd, the Hispanic Heritage Scholarship Fund of Metro Orlando (HHSFMO) celebrated its annual Gowns & Guayaberas Scholarship Awards Gala.
During the evening, the HHSFMO introduced and recognized its 2010 scholarship recipients: Melissa Alicea, Adam Brock, Delia Castro, Cecilia Chirinos-Reyes, Candace Gonzales, Luisa Guerrero-Zerrate, Tamir Hernández, Vanessa Hoyos, Daniella Lao, Marlaine Monroig, Marilyn Mosquera, Leyla Puentes, Kelly Quintero, Juan Robayo, Jasmine Rosa, Veronica Sevilla, Sebastián Sotelo, and Ivan Von Hack-Prestinary. And in partnership with the Hispanic Bar Association of Central Florida, the HHSFMO presented a scholarship to Jessica Gonzalez-Monge, a law student at FAMU School of Law. Each student received a $5,000 scholarship for the 2010 – 2011 academic year at a Central Florida college or university.
The HHSFMO also presented a $10,000 check to the University of Central Florida’s School of Medicine scholarship program – part of HHSFMO’s four-year commitment totaling $40,000. This is the third year of the four-year commitment.
One of the highlights of the evening was the introduction of Mr. Juan Sepúlveda, who is the Director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans. Mr. Sepúlveda delivered an inspirational message about his upbringing, his work at the U.S. Department of Education, and ways that parents and community leaders can work together to improve the educational outcomes of Hispanic youth in the local community.
The HHSFMO is grateful to its 2010 sponsors for their continued support.
