Reviewing All Scholarship Applications
July 1, 2010
On Wednesday, June 30th, the HHSF 2010 Selection Committee met to continue its process of evaluating all of the 2010 HHSF Scholarship applications.
Increase in Applications
This year, we received nearly 200 completed scholarship applications. That is an increase of over 30% from the number of completed scholarship applications received in 2009. We attribute the increase in scholarship applications to a number of factors, such as:
- A challenging economy
- Easier access to the scholarship through the new HHSF web site
- Support from academic officials from colleges and universities in Central Florida
In 2010, the HSSF will award $100,000 scholarships to talented Latino students attending a college or university in Central Florida. The Selection Committee will select 18 applicants, each of which will be awarded a $5,000 academic scholarship. An additional $10,000 scholarship will be awarded in partnership with the UCF College of Medicine.
The Evaluation Process
Each application is evaluated by two members of the Selection Committee. Each application is graded on the following factors:
- Quality of the essay that applicant submitted
- Demonstration of leadership and/or academic recognition
- Examples of volunteerism and/or work experience
- Letters of recommendation submitted by each applicant
- The applicant’s cumulative GPA
In addition to these factors, Selection Committee members also take into consideration the applicant’s financial need.
The 2010 HHSF scholarship winners will be notified of their selection by Friday, July 17th.
